Verstappen Cruises, Chaos in Baku – Azerbaijan GP Recap
If you thought Baku was going to be another McLaren walkover, think again. The Azerbaijan Grand Prix had it all — red flags in qualifying, a jump-start disaster, a dominant Max Verstappen, and a shock podium for Williams.
The Quick Hits
Winner: Max Verstappen (Red Bull) – lights to flag, untouchable.
2nd: George Russell (Mercedes) – nailed the strategy, undercut Sainz
3rd: Carlos Sainz Jr. (Williams) – yes, you read that right. Williams on the podium for the first time since 2017.
Qualifying Madness
Saturday was pure chaos: six red flags, cars in the wall, and timing boards lighting up like a slot machine. Verstappen kept his nose clean and grabbed pole. Sainz stunned everyone with P2, while Oscar Piastri binned his McLaren.
Race Day Drama
The lights went out and… Piastri’s race ended immediately. He jumped the start, stalled, and went straight into the wall on lap one. Safety car came out, the field bunched up, and from there Verstappen simply checked out.
Russell’s undercut late in the race sealed second, while Sainz hung on for a career-defining podium. Norris could only manage seventh after a botched pit stop and getting stuck in traffic.
Championship Picture
Piastri’s DNF cut his lead over Norris from 31 points down to 25. Verstappen is closing in, and McLaren will have to wait at least until Singapore to wrap up the Constructors’ title.
This one had all the chaos Baku is famous for — but in the end, it was Verstappen’s race to lose, and he never looked back.
